Connecting a domain

About Domains

A domain name is the unique address people type into their browser to visit a website.

Domain names make it easy for visitors to find your site. Instead of having to type an IP address, which would be difficult to remember, they can type your memorable domain name instead.

A domain name is made up of:

  • A name: This can be any combination of letters and numbers, but it's usually the name of your company or brand. For example, 'Wix' in Wix.com.

  • A domain extension: The top-level domain ending that appears at the end of your domain name. For example, '.com' in wix.com.

A domain name makes up just one part of a site's full web address (URL). For example, most web addresses start with 'www.' Some sites also have a subdomain like '.blog.wix.com' or 'store.wix.com'.

Personalize your free Wix URL

When you publish your site for the first time, your web address (URL) is in the following format: siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress.

To make this more personalized, you can edit the free Wix URL:

  • Site URL prefix: By default this is generated from your name in your Wix account. You can edit your site URL in your Account Settings.

  • Site address: This is the name of your website. You choose your site name when saving your site for the first time. You can edit it at any time from your site dashboard.

Important:

This will not remove the 'wixsite.com/siteaddress' part of the URL. You need to upgrade your site with a plan before you can connect a custom domain to your site.

Purchase a custom domain from Wix

Purchase a unique domain name for your brand and business directly from Wix. This gives your site a more professional look and can make it easier to find. It can help build trust with customers and strengthen brand awareness.

Having a custom domain name also improves your SEO, which helps you get better placement in search engine results.

Another benefit of having your own domain is the ability to create your own business emails (e.g. mail@mystunningwebsite.com) and subdomains as well (e.g. blog.mystunningwebsite.com).
