Accepting Payments by Manual Card Entry

Accept payments from orders made over the phone, via email or by written request using manual card entry payments - aka Mail Order Telephone Order (MOTO). Manual Card Entry payments are when a merchant manually enters the card details of a customer, with their permission.

Understanding manual card entry payments

These payments are common in the service and retail industries. They allow customers to make payments in a way that would not otherwise be possible; for instance, calling a restaurant to purchase a birthday surprise for a friend you know will be there that evening. Examples include:

  • One-time payments where a customer's card details are typed into the Wix Dashboard, Wix app, or POS at the time of purchase.

  • One-time payments using a saved card on file.

  • The 1st subscription payment where card details are entered manually.
Note for Wix Payments: Subsequent payments in that subscription are not considered to be manual card entry and are processed at regular card processing rates.

Manual card entry payments generally incur a higher processing fee than regular card payments. This is due to a higher fraud rate associated with manual card entry payments.

We recommend you check with your payment provider about their fees for processing manual card entry payments. If Wix Payments is your payment provider, you can find a breakdown of service fees for all transactions processed through Wix Payments.

Payment providers that support manual card entry

To accept Manual Card Entry payments on your Wix site, you'll need to have a payment provider connected that allows Manual Card Entry payments. Currently, these are:

Important information

  • Your site must have a Premium plan that supports payments in order to accept payments.

  • Manual Card Entry payments are currently available with Wix Stores, Wix Bookings, Wix Events, Pricing Plans and POS.

  • Entering credit card details manually is the least secure way of accepting card payments. We recommend accepting manual card payment only from buyers you trust. Learn more about best practices for accepting card payments.

  • Manual Card Entry transactions are considered as insecure. There is no liability shift and you may be fully liable for fraudulent chargebacks.

  • Customers' card details are considered to be Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and are, therefore, subject to privacy laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA. We recommend you delete the card information following the manual entry payment.
