  • About External URL Parameters | Wix Expert

< Back Promoting your site SEO (get found on Google) About External URL Parameters Some external marketing tools can create a duplicate version of your page's URL with added parameters for tracking purposes. For example, the following URL includes a tracking parameter: https://www.mysite.com/ ?gclid=Test Examples of common external parameters: gclid: Added by Google Ads . fbclid : Added by Meta when someone clicks your page through a social post. How parameters affect search results The added parameter doesn't affect your page's content. In most cases, Google recognizes this version of the URL as a duplicate and excludes it from indexing. However, there is still a chance that Google may treat the URL as a separate page of your site and show two versions in search results - the regular URL and another one with tracking parameters. How parameters affect AI-generated answers Duplicate URLs have an effect on AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. These tools crawl and index web pages similarly to traditional search engines, which means they can encounter multiple versions of the same page URL (with and without tracking parameters). When an AI tool has indexed a parameter variant like https://www.mysite.com/ ?fbclid=abc123 , it may cite that version when answering a question about your site. This causes two problems for your visitors: The link may not work as expected (since tracking parameters are often session-specific or expire). Different AI tools may cite different URL versions, making your site look inconsistent. To prevent this, set a canonical URL for your pages. A canonical tag signals to both search engines and AI crawlers which version of a URL is the official one. With a canonical pointing to your clean URL (e.g., https://www.mystunningsite.com/), AI tools have a clear, consistent reference point and are less likely to surface parameter-based variants in their answers. Learn more about changing the canonical tags for your site's pages. Excluding parameters from Google Analytics If you see a URL with tracking parameters in Google Analytics, you can exclude it by applying filters to your view. We recommend adding a new view and applying the filters there, as filters may change your view's future data. • Wix Stores: SEO for Category Pages | Wix Expert

< Back Managing your business Business solutions & apps Wix Stores: SEO for Category Pages Important: This article is about the new version of product categories. If your category creation page doesn't have SEO settings, you have the previous version. Learn more about the previous version of Wix Stores categories. Each category page has its own URL (e.g. www.mysite/category/shirts). This helps search engines understand what you're selling and how your site is organized, making it more SEO friendly. You can further optimize the SEO settings for your store's category pages to help get your store found online. Note: Changes you make to SEO settings do not appear immediately in search results. To help changes appear faster, you can submit your sitemap to Google . Optimizing your title tags, meta descriptions, and URL slugs Category pages, like other site pages, include a title tag, meta description, and URL slug to help search engines and social networks show relevant information. There are default SEO settings that Wix automatically adds to your category pages: Title tag: The category name and site name Meta description: The first approx. 160 characters of the category description URL slug (ending of the category page URL): The category name To edit the category page's SEO settings: Go to Categories in the dashboard. Select the category you want to edit. Click Edit SEO Settings under Marketing & SEO . Edit any of the following: Title tag: Add a title that summarizes what the category is. We recommend giving concise category names (maximum 60 characters) that help potential customers understand the category. Meta description: Add a short description of your category (maximum 156 characters). This description helps users who read the description in search engine results decide if the page is relevant to them. URL Slug: This text is the last part of your page's direct link. You should only change this if it's necessary to reflect the content of your page. We recommend keeping it short and easy to read. Tip: When you change a Category Page URL slug, make sure manually create your own redirect so the previous link redirects to the new one. Click Save . Preventing search engines from indexing the page In most cases, you'll want search engines to index your shop's categories and display them in search results, however, you may want to hide specific ones. For example, if you display a category only on a password-protected page that isn't available to the general public, you may not want it to appear in search engine results. To prevent search engines from indexing the category page: Go to Categories in the dashboard. Click the category you want to edit. Click Edit SEO Settings under Marketing & SEO . Disable the Let search engines index this page toggle. Managing canonical URLs The URL for each category page is automatically generated according to the category name. In addition, you can edit a category's URL slug (see above). The canonical URL is a meta tag that defines the primary URL of a given page. In other words, if there are multiple versions of your page's URL, this meta tag tells search engines which version they should index and show to potential site visitors. Learn more about canonical tags . Wix automatically creates a default canonical URL for all of your pages. You can customize it in the Advanced tab. To edit the category page's canonical URL: Go to Categories in the dashboard. Click the category you want to edit. Click Edit SEO Settings under Marketing & SEO . Click Advanced . Compliance considerations for merchants When adding an order cancellation button, make sure your solution complies with all relevant local regulations. Two-step cancellation process The cancellation button should open a dedicated cancellation request form where customers can specify which order or contract they want to cancel. The form should collect enough information to identify the order, such as: Customer name Email address Order number Order date (if applicable) After completing the form, customers should confirm their request with a final action, for example, by clicking a Submit cancellation request button. This completes the cancellation request. No login required Customers should be able to submit a cancellation request without creating an account or logging in. Guest customers must have the same ability to submit a cancellation request electronically as registered customers. Immediate electronic confirmation After submitting a cancellation request, customers should immediately receive an electronic confirmation that their request was received. Make sure your chosen solution provides this confirmation where required by local law. High visibility and accessibility Make sure the cancellation button is clearly visible and easy to find throughout the cancellation period. Do not place it somewhere customers need to click through multiple pages, account areas, or complex menus to access it. • Defining your Site's Hierarchy for SEO | Wix Expert

< Back Promoting your site SEO (get found on Google) Defining your Site's Hierarchy for SEO Improve search engines' and visitors' understanding of the relationship between your site's pages by defining your site's hierarchy. You can define the relationships between your site's main pages. The defined hierarchy is visible through your site's URL paths. Understanding site hierarchy Your site's hierarchy, meaning its structure, helps search engines and AI tools understand how your site is organized, and the relationship between pages. Search engines tend to rank pages higher in search results that are closest in relation to your homepage, so it's important to position your pages correctly within your hierarchy. Defining a hierarchical site structure requires setting up a parent - child relationship between your site's main pages. A parent page is a top-level page with child pages nested under it. Your site's hierarchy is represented through URLs. For example, you could set your parent page to be "About Our Customers" and a child page to be "Customer Stories". The URL for this structure may look like this: www.mydomain.com/about-our-customers/customer-stories . Defining your site's hierarchy You can adjust the relationship and positioning of your site's main pages from SEO Settings in the dashboard, or from the SEO Basics panel in your editor. Begin by selecting the page you want to become a child page, and then choose its parent. To set a page as a parent page: Dashboard Go to SEO & GEO in your site's dashboard. Scroll down to Tools and settings . Click SEO Settings . Click Main Pages . Click the Edit next to the relevant page. Click the Parent page (site hierarchy) drop-down and select a parent page. Wix Editor Go to your editor . Click Pages & Menu on the left side of the editor. Click the More Actions icon next to the relevant page. Click SEO basics . Click the Parent page (site hierarchy) drop-down and select a parent page. Studio Editor Go to your editor . Click Pages on the left side of the editor. Click the More Actions icon next to the relevant page. Click SEO Basics . Click the Parent page (site hierarchy) drop-down and select a parent page. FAQs Click a question below to learn more about defining your site's hierarchy: How many levels of hierarchy can my site have? Google allows a maximum of 5 levels of hierarchy on your site, not including your domain. This means your hierarchical structure cannot exceed the following format: www.mydomain.com/ great-grandparent/grandparent/parent/child/grandchild . Can I define a page hierarchy for pages that are part of Wix Apps? No. It's not possible to define a hierarchy for pages that are part of Wix apps, for example, Product pages, Blog pages or Members Area pages etc. This is because these pages already have their own predefined hierarchical structure in place. Can I change my homepage's position in the site hierarchy? No. Your homepage by default always assumes the highest position in your site's hierarchy. This means you can't position your homepage to be a child of another page. You can, however, set a new homepage , but keep in mind that this will flatten the URL of any child pages assigned to it. For example, a URL for a child page with a parent like www.mydomain.com/parent/child will flatten to www.mydomain.com/child. How do I remove a page as a parent? You can remove a page as a parent by setting the homepage of your site to be the parent instead. For example, a URL for a child page with a parent like www.mydomain.com/parent/child will flatten to www.mydomain.com/child. What happens if I delete a parent page? If you delete a parent page, the URL of any child pages assigned to that parent will flatten. For example, a URL for a child page with a parent like www.mydomain.com/parent/child will flatten to www.mydomain.com/child. Can I define a site hierarchy for my multilingual site? Yes. You can define your multilingual site's hierarchy by setting up parent-child relationships between pages in your site's main language. Keep in mind that it is not possible to set up site hierarchies per individual language. The hierarchy you set for your main language applies to all secondary languages. Will my traffic to my pages be automatically redirected? If you have your own custom domain, traffic will be automatically redirected to both the new URL and its child pages' URLs. If you don't have your own custom domain, you will have to manually create 301 redirects in the URL Redirect Manager for the relevant pages. Does my site hierarchy affect my llms.txt file? A clear, organized hierarchy can help produce a more accurate llms.txt summary. Learn more about your site's llms.txt file.
