- Wix Automations: Sending an HTTP Request | Wix Expert
< Back Managing your business Managing your customers Wix Automations: Sending an HTTP Request Before you begin: This article is intended for advanced users. Sending an HTTP request requires prior technical knowledge and experience working with webhooks. Wix Automations integrate seamlessly with external services by sending or retrieving data from any webhook or API endpoint. Use the HTTP request action to trigger events, update external records, or incorporate external data into later steps of your automation flow. This action supports real-time communication between disconnected systems, making it easy to handle request bodies, manage responses (e.g. JSON), and map the returned data for subsequent automation steps. Step 1 | Set up a new automation To get started, create a new automation and add the HTTP request action. To set up an automation: Go to Automations in your site's dashboard. Click + Create Automation at the top right Click + Start from Scratch . Click the title to give your automation a name. Select a trigger for your automation. Click + to add a step. Click Action . Select Send HTTP request on the left. Step 2 | Configure the HTTP request Set up the details of your HTTP request, including the method, URL, and the data you’d like to send. Click below to learn how to configure each field. Method Select the details of your HTTP request starting with the method based on the action you want to perform. POST: Submits data to be processed (e.g. creating a new record). GET: Retrieves data from the specified resource (e.g. fetch a list of users). PUT: Updates or replaces an existing resource (e.g. update user info). DELETE: Removes the specified resource. OPTIONS: Used less frequently, depending on the API specifications. PATCH: Used less frequently, depending on the API specifications. Webhook URL Enter the target URL that should receive the notifications. It can include any path or query parameter you may need in order to reach the proper destination – click Customize next to Webhook URL to add a new parameter. Path Parameters Some APIs require a path parameter. For example, you can get the weather results simply by searching the zipcode if you know it. Query Parameters Some APIs require a query parameter. For example, you can search the weather by state and city. Request body Decide what data is included in the body of your request. Depending on the HTTP method you choose, the available options may change for what can be included in your request. Adjust the following options: Nest request body under data: Enable or disable this toggle to control whether the request body is wrapped inside a parent 'data' object. This depends on how your endpoint expects to receive the data. Request body: Choose which data to include as part of this webhook request. All automation data: All data from the trigger is sent to the target URL. For example, if the trigger is Wix Forms, the webhook sends data from every form field. Tip: Click Preview request body to see all the data that the webhook will send. Choose fields: Only specific data is sent to the target URL. For example, if your trigger is Wix Forms you might only want to send the Name and Email fields. Click + Add New Item . Enter a key name in the Key field. This helps you distinguish what data is sent. Enter a value in the Value field to choose the data that should match the key. Tip: Click Customize to create custom workflows using the formula field . Click Add . (Optional) Click + Add New Item to add another row and match key names to data. Note: If you choose not to map a specific key to a value, the webhook will notify the URL without any additional information from the trigger. (Optional) Step 3 | Set response data structure Finally, configure the data structure returned from the external service to match Wix Automations' schema. For example, for a response from the weather app we can enter a sample JSON like this: Note: This sample data is used to generate an output data structure. The automation can then treat these fields (e.g. firstName, id, age) as distinct variables, which you can use in later steps. To set your response structure: Click Set Response Data Structure to define the data passed to your automation. Enter a JSON example that you expect to see in the response. Click Preview Structure . Click Save Structure or Edit JSON to continue editing. When you're done, click Apply . Step 4 | Activate the automation At the top right save as a draft and come back later or activate right away. It now appears on your Automations page where you can monitor, edit, deactivate, or delete according to your needs. Tip: Send a test request to make sure you have successfully set up your response to meet your expectations. FAQs Click below to learn more about sending an HTTP request. Can I call Wix APIs using this feature? No, this feature does not support calls to Wix’s own APIs. You can only target external services. What happens if my automation is turned off? If your automation is turned off, Wix Automations will not send requests. What if the payload I receive from an external service doesn’t match my defined schema? If the payload has inconsistencies with the data structure you defined, your automation will still run. Fields that don’t match or aren’t present will simply be ignored, as they are not considered mandatory. Why didn't the data I expected appear in the next steps? If the data doesn’t appear in the next step, ensure your response schema is correctly set up. If data still doesn’t appear, re-check your endpoint’s logs or documentation to confirm the structure of the response.
