Wix Stores: Creating Subscription Products

Important:

We're in the process of releasing a brand-new product creation page. If the first field you see is ' Images and videos', you have the previous version and should follow these instructions on creating product subscriptions.

Selling a product as a subscription service helps you create a steady cash flow and loyal customer base. Choose how you offer your product: subscription only, or as both a subscription and a one-time purchase.

Important:

To sell product subscriptions, you must connect a payment method that supports recurring payments.

Setting up subscriptions

Click Create a Subscription and fill out the required fields. The name and the tagline will be visible to store customers.

To set up a subscription:

  2. Create a new physical product or edit an existing one.

FAQs

Click a question below to learn more about creating subscription products:

After a customer purchases a subscription, a new order appears in your Orders tab. Then, every subscription period, an additional order appears in the tab. Simply fulfill each order as you would any non-subscription order.

You may need to make changes to an existing subscription, such as an address update, adding a grace period for failed payments, and more. Learn how to manage product subscriptions.

Product subscriptions cannot be created for digital products. Additionally, it's not possible to set up pre-orders for a product subscription.

Note that some payment providers place restrictions on the type of products that can be sold (e.g. restriction on CBD products). For more information, check with your chosen payment provider.

If the product is out of stock when the next subscription cycle occurs, the order is still created.

In other words, if a subscription customer has an order is created at the 1st of every month, an order is still created on June 1st even if your inventory status that day is zero.

Note: The order pushes your stock into negative numbers.

If your customer's subscription order also contains additional subscriptions or one-time purchases, the shipping fee applied to that entire order will be applied to every future subscription cycle.

Let's look at an example of a customer's order which contains:

  • A monthly coffee subscription

  • A weekly tea subscription

  • A mug (a one-time purchase)

The shipping fee for the 3 items is $10.

Next week, when the 2nd tea subscription cycle is fulfilled, the shipping cost will be $10. Similarly, next month, when the coffee subscription is fulfilled, the shipping cost will be $10.

In other words, every cycle going forward has a $10 shipping fee even if the shipping fee would have been $5 for a single subscription purchase.

If your customer's order contains a subscription as well as other items, the shipping fee applied to that order is applied for every future subscription cycle, even if the shipping cost is greater than it would be to ship the subscription item alone.

Tip: In some cases, you may want to ask your customer if they prefer to cancel and redo the subscription to reduce the shipping fee.

When credit cards expire or the payment fails for some other reason, you can add a grace period during which your customer can resubmit payment. This way, the subscription doesn't get canceled.
