Wix Stores: Adding Product Options
Important:
We're in the process of releasing a brand-new product creation page. If the first field you see is ' Images and videos', you have the previous version and should follow these instructions on adding product options.
Product options help you provide customers with choices, such as product size, color, or material. After creating the necessary options, you can manage inventory, set pricing, and more for each variant.

Before you create product options:
Wix Stores gives you the option of adding modifiers to products in addition to product options. Use modifiers to allow customers to send you messages (e.g. which name to engrave) or to add product variations that don't require separate inventory or pricing.
Learn more about the difference between modifiers and product options.
Understanding product option terminology
To make it easier for you to manage your product options, make sure you understand the terms used.
Product options: This refers to the type of option, for instance 'Color' or 'Size'.
Product option choices: This term refers to the available choices for a product option. For the 'Color' option, your choices might be 'Blue' or 'Green'.
Variants: This term refers to the specific item you sell. For example, if your product has 2 product options (size and color), and each has 2 product option choices (small or large; blue or green), your product has 4 variants:
Small - blue
Small - green
Large - blue
Large - green
Creating Product Options
Adding product options enables your customers to make customized choices. These options are displayed as text choices or color swatches.

To add a product option:
Go to Products in your site's dashboard.
Click + New Product, or select an existing product.
Scroll down to the Product Options section.
Click + Add Option.
Choose the kind of option you want to create:
Create a color swatch option
Use this option to let customers select the color of your product.

Tip: You also have the option of uploading a swatch image instead of a solid color. This can come in handy when you're selling a product with a pattern.

Select Color swatches from the Field type dropdown.
Enter or select an option name (e.g. Color or Pattern).
Type your first color name (e.g. Blue or Floral).
Click the Select shade icon

.
Enter a color code or select a shade.
Note: The shade you choose will be used for this color in all products.
(Optional) Select a swatch image:
Note: Even if you add an image, you need to select a color.
Click the Plus icon next to Swatch image.
Upload or select the swatch image and click Add Media.
Tip: You can use your product image to create a swatch image (see FAQ below).

Click the Checkmark icon

.
Add additional colors.
Click Add.
Create a text choice option
Create text options, such as size. Go to the layout settings in your editor to choose how you want to display the text option, in a dropdown list or as buttons.

Select Text choices from the Field type dropdown.
Enter or select an option name (e.g. Size).
Type your first option choice (e.g. Small).
Click +Another Choice and add the additional option choices (e.g. Medium and Large).
Click Add.
Displaying different images for product option choices
Linking images or videos to product option choices enhances the shopping experience. Customers can visualize how the variations, like colors or patterns, look before they order.

To connect media to option choices:
Go to Products in your site's dashboard.
Select a product with product options.
Click the Connect images and videos icon

next to the relevant product option in the Product Options section.

Click the + icon next to an option choice.
Upload or select up to 50 images or videos.
Click Apply.
Note:
Connecting media works for individual product option choices (e.g. each color choice) but not for each variant (e.g. blue small, blue large, green small, green large).
Managing pricing and other settings per product variant
Once product options are created, settings like pricing, inventory, and pre-order availability are managed per variant, not for the product as a whole. To get started customizing the variant settings, click Edit Variants.
Note that you can customize which columns you display. If you don't see the column with the setting you need, you can add it.

Pricing
Store products have a number of pricing settings:
Product price
Strikethrough price
Cost of goods
Price per unit
As soon as you add product options, all of these are managed per variant. Learn more about pricing settings for store products.
Inventory
Set your inventory amount or status per variant. Note that you can also update inventory for multiple products and variants at once in the Inventory tab.
Tip:
If you have variants that don't require separate inventory, we suggest you add product modifiers.
Pre-order
Allow customers to pre-order one or more variants when they're out of stock. Learn more about setting up pre-orders.
Cost of goods
Track how much it costs to purchase or produce each product variant so that your profit and margin can be calculated automatically. Learn more about calculating your cost of goods.
SKU or Barcode (GTIN)
Give each product variant a unique SKU (stock keeping unit), barcode, or GTIN (Global Trade Item Number).
Shipping weight
If you set up shipping by weight, you can enter a weight for each variant.
Updating multiple variants at once
Updating multiple variants can save time if you need to make similar changes, such as adjusting prices, SKUs, or weights.
Tip:
For advanced control, use the Inventory tab for bulk edits.
To bulk edit product variants:
Go to Products in your site's dashboard.
Select a product with product options.
Click Edit Variants.
Select the variants you want to update:
All Variants: Select the checkbox at the top.
Specific variants: Select the checkboxes next to the relevant options.
Tip: You can filter the list.
Click Set Visibility or More Actions and make the required changes.
FAQs
Click a question below to learn more about adding product options:
How many product options can I create per product?
Each product can include up to 6 product options (e.g. Size, Color, Style) with 100 choices per option (e.g. 100 sizes).
What happens if I enter details like price or weight for a product, but then create options?
When you enter details on the product level, most of those details are applied to each variant created.
The following details are applied per variant after you add product options:
Price
Strikethrough price
Pre-order & pre-order limit
Cost of goods
Price per unit
Shipping weight
Other details, such as inventory levels, need to be added to each variant after you create product options.
What happens if I remove or add options to an existing product?
After editing the options list, you’ll need to reconfigure variants. Adjust settings like inventory, pricing, and SKUs for any new variants.
Can I change the name of a product option and have the change apply to all products?
Yes. Click the Settings icon

next to Product Options to view a list of all the product options names you created. Then, click Edit next to the name you want to edit.

I'm editing variants. Why don't I see some of the settings?
There are many available variant settings. Use the Customize columns feature to set which ones are visible, and then use the horizontal scrollbar to access them all. You can save your most commonly used selection as your default view along with additional views.

To customize the product option columns:
Select a product and click Edit Variants.
Click the Customize column icon

.
Select the checkboxes next to the columns you want to display and close the window.
Click Apply & Continue.
(Optional) Save your selections:
Click Manage View.
Select an option:
Click Save as default view: Your selections are applied to all products.
Click Save as new view: Give this view a name and save it to quickly apply the selections in future.
Can I display text options as buttons instead of in a dropdown list?
Yes. After creating text options, go to your editor to select between a button or dropdown display. Learn more about selecting how your text options are displayed.
I use my product options to display filters on my live site. How can I organize them?
You can make filtering simpler for customers by grouping similar option choices together. For example, instead of showing each shade as a separate filter, you can combine them into a single filter for each color.
You can also chose how you want to sort the filter options, including the ability to manual reorder them into an order that makes sense for your site.
Learn more about grouping and reordering your product filters.
How can I create a swatch image from my product image?
Instead of uploading a swatch image, you can create one from your product image while creating product option choices.
Click the Plus icon next to Swatch image.
Hover over the swatch image and select Crop & Edit.
Crop the image so it shows the pattern and click Save.
Select the swatch and click Add Media.
Enter a color code or select a shade.
Tip: Even when you display an image swatch, you need to select a color.
Click the Checkmark icon
