Managing your languages

Manage the languages on your Wix Multilingual site from your site's dashboard. Add or remove languages, adjust visibility, or set a default visitor language to ensure the best experience for your audience. You can also import or export translations to save time and keep your content consistent.

To manage your site's languages:

  1. Go to Multilingual in your site's dashboard.

  2. Choose what you want to do next:

  1. Click + Add Language.

  2. Select the language you want to add from the Language drop-down.

  3. Select a flag to represent the language from the Flag drop-down.

  4. Choose how you want to start translating: Manual translation or Machine translation.

  5. (If available) Click the Make site in {language} visible right away drop-down and choose an option:

    • No, keep it hidden for now: Keep the new language version hidden from your live site for now. You can unhide it later.

    • Yes, make it visible right away: Make the new language version of your site available so visitors and search engines can view it. You can do this later if needed.

  6. Click Add Language.

Add locales to adjust your site's text for different physical areas of the same language. Locales align your site's content with the distinct needs of your target audience. For example, set versions of your site for English in England (en-GB) and in Ireland (en-IE). Each version will get its own URL and regional formats (e.g., metric vs. imperial systems).

  1. Click + Add Language.

  2. Click the Language drop-down and select the language you want to add.

  3. Click the Flag drop-down and select a flag to represent the language.

  4. Enable the Locale setting toggle.

  5. Click the Locale drop-down and select the locale (Only available for manual translation).

  7. Click Add Language.

The default visitor language is the first language visitors see on your site, which may differ from the site's original language. Visitors can switch to other languages at any time.

Having control over the default language allows you to tailor the user experience for your site visitors, especially if a specific language is more relevant to your audience or your business.

For example, if your main business language is English but most of your site visitors speak Spanish, you could ensure their default view is in Spanish to create a more welcoming and engaging experience.

  1. Click the More Actions icon

    next to the relevant language.

  2. Select Set as default visitor language.

  3. Click Set as default.

Any time you add a secondary language, it is hidden by default. When you finish translating that language and are happy with how it looks, unhide it to show it to the world.

Click the Status drop-down next to the relevant language and select an option:

  • Visible: The language is accessible to site visitors and appears in the language menu.

  • Hidden: The language is not accessible to site visitors (even with a direct link) and does not appear in the language menu.

When you delete a language, its translations, and any changes you made to that language are permanently deleted.

  1. Click the More Actions icon

next to the language you want to delete.

  2. Select Delete language.

  3. Click Delete to confirm.

Export and import your site content for manual translation. By downloading a CSV file, you can send your content to a professional translator. Once the translations are ready, import the translated content back to your site.

Wix Multilingual: Managing Your Languages

Changing the main language is designed for situations where you chose the wrong original language when you first set up Wix Multilingual, or your business has switched to a different primary language.

Before you change your main language, keep the following in mind:

  • Changing your main language does not translate your existing content. Your pages, menus, and app content stay in the languages you already set. If you only want visitors to see a different language first, set a default visitor language instead of changing the main language, or enable the auto-switch language toggle to automatically redirect visitors to the language version of your site that matches their browser's language.

  • You cannot change your main language to a language that is already set as a secondary language. To use that language as your main language, delete it from your languages list first, then set it as the main language.

  • Existing content and translations are not updated or moved to the new main language. You may need to review your content and translations after making the change.

To change your site's main language:

  1. Click the More Actions icon next to Original language.

  2. Select Change original language.

  3. Select the language and the flag and click Change original language.

Workarounds:

To make sure your automations work for every language on your site, create a separate automation for each language you support. Use dynamic values and set up your email templates in the right language for each group. Double-check that the trigger for each automation (like a form submission) is connected to the correct version of your page or form.

Automated actions, such as scheduled emails or reminders, use the time zone set in your site's regional settings. If times seem off, check your site’s regional settings to make sure the right time zone is selected.

Automated emails usually follow either your site’s default language or the recipient’s language preferences. If your emails are appearing in the wrong language, start by checking your site’s language settings and the specific email template you’re using. For multilingual sites, remember to set up a separate automation for each language, and make sure to target the right contacts for each one.
