Connecting a Wix Domain to an External Site via Pointing

You can connect a domain purchased from Wix to any site, even if it's hosted on another platform. To do this, edit the DNS records in your Wix account so they point to your external site.

Pointing your domain in this way means that when someone enters your domain in their browser, they see the site that is hosted externally.

Note:

If your host requires you to use its nameservers instead of pointing, you can change your NS records. Learn more about changing nameserver records for a Wix Domain.

Step 1 | Get the DNS records from your external host

Contact your external site host and ask for the DNS records you need to use to point your Wix domain to your site. They should give you the A record (Host) and CNAME record (Alias) they want you to connect to.

Ask your host for:

  • The A record your root domain should point to. They should provide you with an IP address, and may also provide a host name.

  • The CNAME record your www address should point to. They should provide a host name and a domain.

Step 2 | Update your A records

Your A records connect your domain to an IP address. Your host will most likely give you one IP address that your main domain should point to. However, you can add multiple A records if necessary.

Important:

Make sure to delete any old A records after adding your new ones to avoid a conflict between records. Click the Domain Actions icon

FAQs

Click a question below to learn more about connecting your Wix domain to an external site.

When your domain and site are not hosted by the same company, you can still connect them. Pointing a Wix domain to an external site means connecting your domain name to the web host server where your site files are located. When someone enters your domain in their browser, they see your site, which is hosted on a platform other than Wix.

Domain Name System (DNS) records are instructions that tell the internet where to find your website. A DNS record links easy-to-read domain names (like your site's web address) to information that your computer can read (like your site's unique IP address).

An A record is a type of DNS record. A records map a domain (e.g. mywebsite.com) or a subdomain (e.g. blog.mywebsite.com) to an IP address (the numeric address of the server that hosts your site).

CNAME (Canonical Name) records are a type of DNS record. They let you point one name, for example www.yourdomain.com, to another host name. This is often used for the www version of your site or for subdomains.

If your host does not support connection via pointing, or requires you to change your domain’s nameservers, you can use custom nameservers instead.

When you switch to custom nameservers, your domain stays registered with Wix, but Wix no longer manages your domain's DNS. Learn more about changing nameserver records for a Wix Domain.

DNS changes, such as updates to A or CNAME records, can take up to 48 hours to fully update across the internet. During this time, your site may not be accessible from all devices or some visitors may see a previously connected, older version of your site.
