  • CMS: Converting an Existing Page to a Dynamic Page | Wix Expert

< Back Advanced features CMS CMS: Converting an Existing Page to a Dynamic Page A dynamic page lets you use a single page as a template to display different content from your CMS collection, while keeping the same structure and layout. This is ideal for websites with repetitive content. For example, a gallery website can use a dynamic page to showcase individual art pieces, automatically pulling titles, artist names, and images from a CMS collection, all while maintaining the same page structure. Convert static pages that could be displayed in a unified layout to dynamic item pages by following the steps below. This can save you time and effort, especially if you have a lot of similar content to manage or if you're approaching the 100 static page limit. About your site's page quota: Wix sites can have up to 298 pages, including up to 100 static pages, plus dynamic pages, app pages, popups, Signup & Login, and Search Results pages. Dynamic and app pages may create unique URLs for items, but only the main page counts toward your quota—not individual items or URLs. Learn more about using dynamic pages to scale efficiently . For an overview of this process, check out our Ultimate CMS Guide video . Converting an existing page to a dynamic item page Go to the Pages panel in your editor to begin converting a regular page into a dynamic item page. Wix Editor Go to your editor . Click Pages & Menu on the left side of the editor. Hover over the page you want to convert and click the More Actions icon . Select Convert to dynamic Page . Click Start Now . You’ll still need to manually add any additional content as new items in the CMS collection . After conversion, ensure that you add and connect all relevant page elements to the appropriate fields in the CMS collection. Note: You don’t need to repeat these steps for other static pages that will connect to the same collection. Instead, simply add all content (text, images, etc.) from those pages as new items in your CMS collection. This will automatically create dynamic items that can be displayed on this page, as long as the item URLs are unique . Select New collection under Save to a collection . Enter the name of the collection. (If using coding) Enter a collection ID that will be used in your site's code. Click Next . In the panel on the right, select the elements in which you want to show dynamic content that changes based on the item displayed. FAQs Click below for answers to common questions about converting static pages to dynamic pages. What happens when I convert a static page to a dynamic page? When you convert a page, it is automatically set up as a dynamic item page. This type of page can only display one item at a time. If you want to have a dynamic list page that can display multiple items, you have two options. You can either: Add a dynamic list page : Create a separate dynamic list page for your collection to display multiple items that you can link to your dynamic item page. Convert the dynamic item page to a dynamic list page : Remove the variable field from the URL slug structure to convert the page into a dynamic list page. Learn how to edit the URL slug structure to remove the variable and turn the page into a dynamic list page. What if I reach the 100 static page limit? If you’ve reached the 100 static page limit, consider converting pages to dynamic pages. Each dynamic page you add counts as one page toward your site’s total, but it can generate unique URLs for every item in a connected collection (e.g., products, posts, listings) without consuming additional pages from your quota. Wix sites have a total pages quota of 298. Only the pages you add (as they appear in the Pages panel) count toward this quota—not the number of CMS/app items or their item‑level URLs. Tips to reduce your page count: Consolidate similar static pages into one dynamic page template Use sections, anchors, filters, and pagination instead of separate pages Remove redundant static pages after migrating their content to a collection When converting a page, choose to save to a new or existing CMS collection: Saving to a new collection: With this method, you choose which page elements get their content automatically added to the collection. Each element you choose to make dynamic is automatically connected to the new collection through the page's dataset . Saving to an existing collection: After converting to an existing collection, you need to move the content from the pages to the collection (e.g. by copying and pasting). This ensures the content is stored in your CMS collection so you can connect it dynamically to the page elements (like text, images, and buttons). After moving the content, delete any extra pages you no longer need that were converted to the dynamic page. What types of pages can I convert to dynamic pages? You can convert any regular static page to a dynamic page . However, please note that you cannot convert your home page or Wix app pages, such as Stores, Bookings, or Events, into dynamic pages. What can I manage in my CMS collection? In your CMS collection, you can manage all the data used across your dynamic content. This includes creating and editing items (like products or blog entries), organizing the collection's structure, setting permissions, and configuring which fields should be displayed on your site. Learn how to manage your CMS collection . How can I connect elements to my CMS collection? You can connect elements on your page such as text, images, buttons, or galleries to your CMS collection. This ensures that the elements dynamically display data from your collection, like product names, descriptions, or images, without requiring manual updates for each item. Learn how to connect more elements to your CMS collection . What is a dynamic list page, and why should I create one? A dynamic list page is a page connected to your CMS collection that displays a list of items (e.g., blog posts, recipes, or products) in a repeater, gallery, or table. It’s automatically populated with the data in your collection, saving you time from creating individual pages for each item. Visitors can browse all your items in one place on the dynamic list page. Learn how to create a dynamic list page to display multiple items on the same page. How do I modify the URLs of my dynamic pages? By default, your dynamic item page is created with the following URL slug structure: www.your-domain.com/{ collection-name }/{ primary-field } If you remove the Primary field from the URL slug, the page is automatically converted to a dynamic list page . This allows you to dynamically display several items on the page in a repeater, gallery or table. Go to SEO tab of the page settings to edit the URL slug structure. Then click Edit next to the URL slug structure field. Edit the URL structure as needed and click Save . Learn more about URL slug structures . In your site's Roles & Permissions settings, you can add roles that give collaborators access to your CMS collections. These CMS access roles , by default, have all the collection permissions to view, add, update, and delete items. However, you can fine-tune their access levels for each collection in your collection permissions . Keep in mind that CMS admin roles always maintain full access to your collections. This means CMS admins can perform all actions, including viewing, adding, updating, and deleting collection content, whether from the live site or the CMS itself. Collection permissions allow you to define what people can do with a specific collection's content. You can define different access levels for each type of user. This includes everyone who can view your site, site members, collaborators with CMS access, and even specific collaborator roles. Different types of users interact with your collection content in different ways, depending on the permissions you grant. While some actions are restricted to the live site, others extend to the CMS backend for collaborators. Here's how collection permissions work for each group of users: Everyone and site members: When granted the relevant collection permissions, these users can only perform actions, such as viewing or modifying collection content, directly on your live site. Typically, this is done through input elements , but can also be done with the Data API . Collaborators with CMS access: These collaborators, on the other hand, can perform these same actions both on the live site and within the CMS backend. Their access to the CMS provides additional control and management capabilities that go beyond what’s available on the live site alone. Can I restrict admin roles from accessing the CMS? No, admin roles always grant unrestricted access to the CMS, in addition to other areas of your site. To avoid giving full CMS access, ensure you do not assign permissions that elevate the role to admin status. Can I change a custom role’s permissions after it’s created? Yes, you can edit a custom role’s permissions at any time. Go to Roles & Permissions in your dashboard, select the role you want to modify, and adjust its permissions as needed. What is the difference between 'Manage Content' and 'Edit Drafts'? Manage Content lets collaborators add, edit, and publish content in existing collections. Edit Drafts is more limited — collaborators with this permission can add, edit, and delete draft items, but cannot publish them. Use it to let team members prepare content in collections that are set to Save changes as draft first , while someone with publishing permissions decides what goes live. • CMS: Creating a Custom Form with Input Elements that Submit to Your Collection | Wix Expert

< Back Advanced features CMS CMS: Creating a Custom Form with Input Elements that Submit to Your Collection Create a custom CMS form that allows visitors to use input elements to submit their info directly to your collection. Input elements include text boxes, dropdown selectors, date & time pickers and more. This article walks you through creating a collection to store the submissions, adding input elements and a submit button, and using datasets to connect it all. Need a simpler, prebuilt custom form? Check out Wix Forms to view template forms that require less setup such as contact forms, order forms, registration forms and more. Before you begin: Make sure to add the CMS to your site if you haven't already. For an overview of this process, check out our Ultimate CMS Guide video . Step 1 | Create a collection and set the permissions Create a collection where you will store the custom form submissions and set the collection permissions . You can choose the Collect content permission settings, then choose who should be allowed to add or view the content from your live site. Or, you can choose Advanced to specify who can view, add, update, and delete content for each role (everyone, members, item's creator, and collaborators). You can add fields to the collection at this point but we recommend adding them later ( step 3 ) when you connect the input elements. That way you can be sure that you're only adding the types of fields that can connect to each type of input element. To create a collection for storing form submissions: Go to CMS in your site's dashboard. Click Create Collection . Click Start from scratch . Tip: Alternatively, click Create with AI to let AI (Artificial Intelligence) create a collection for you . Click Next . Enter a name for your collection. Let's refer to this collection as your 'Submissions' collection. (Coding only) Enter a collection ID to use in your code. Leave Multiple item collection (Default) selected and click Create . Click More Actions and select Permissions & privacy . Choose which permissions to use for the collection: Collect content Allow visitors to add content as new items in your collection. This does not allow visitors to add content to existing collection items. Use the Advanced permissions if you want to allow visitors to update existing content. See this FAQ section for more information. Click Collect content . Click the Who can add content to this collection? drop-down and choose an option: Everyone: Any site visitor can add new items to the collection from the live site. Collaborators with CMS access roles and admins can also add items from within the CMS. Members only: Only site members, collaborators with CMS access roles, and admins can add new items to the collection from the live site. Collaborators with CMS access and admins can also add items from within the CMS. Click the Who can view this content? drop-down and choose an option: Collaborators: Admins and collaborators with CMS access roles can view the collection content in the CMS and the live site. Tip: To assign permissions for a specific collaborator role, use the Advanced collection permissions and click + Set permissions for specific roles . Members only: Only site members, collaborators with CMS access and admins can view the collection content on the live site. Collaborators with CMS access and admins can also view it within the CMS. Item's creator: Site members can only view items on the live site that they themselves added to the collection. Collaborators and admins can still view all the items on both the live site, and in the CMS. Everyone: Any site visitor can view the collection content on the live site. Collaborators with CMS access and admins can also view it within the CMS. Click Save . Note: With these 'Collect content' collection permissions, admins and collaborators with CMS access maintain full access to the collection. They can perform all actions, including viewing, adding, updating, and deleting collection content, whether from the live site or the CMS itself. Advanced With the 'Advanced' permissions, you can select different permissions for viewing, adding, updating, and deleting content for each role. This lets you control what people with each access level can do with your site's collection content. For each user role, select the checkboxes to choose whether they can view content, add new items, update existing items, or delete items. You can also create permissions for specific collaborator roles for greater control over which collaborators can view, add, update, or delete items. Click Advanced . (Optional) Set permissions for specific collaborator roles: Note: By default, all collaborators with CMS access roles share the same permissions unless you create permissions for specific collaborator roles. Click + Set permissions for specific roles . Click the checkbox next to each collaborator role that you want to set specific permissions for. Only roles that allow for CMS access are available. Click Roles & Permissions at the bottom if you need to create or modify any collaborator roles . Click Done . Click the relevant checkboxes next to each role to choose whether users with the role can view, add, update, or delete collection items: Everyone: This role applies to everyone who can access your live site. Selecting a permission for this role also selects it for the other roles in the table. Members: This role applies to site members only. Selecting a permission for this role also selects it for the 'Item's creator' role, the 'Collaborators' role, and any specific roles you add to the table. Item's creator: This role's permissions only apply to the specific items that a member creates themselves. For example, you can set permissions to allow the item's creator to update or delete only the items that they create. Selecting a permission for this role also selects it for the 'Collaborators' role and any specific roles you add to the table. Collaborators: This role applies to all collaborator roles with CMS access. Selecting a permission for this role also selects it for any specific collaborator roles you've set permissions for. Admin: This role applies to site owners and collaborator roles with CMS admin permissions. You cannot change the permissions of this 'Admin' role. Specific roles: If you add roles to the table, they apply to collaborators with specific CMS access roles. If you set permissions for a specific role, then deselect a permission in that role, the permission is also deselected in the main 'Collaborators' role. Click Save . In the table, you can choose from the following access levels for each role: View: People with the relevant role(s) can view the collection content. Add: People with the relevant role(s) can add new items to the collection. Update: People with the relevant role(s) can edit existing collection items. Delete: People with the relevant role(s) can remove existing collection items. Wix Editor Go to your editor . Go to the page or section where you want to create a custom form. Click Add Elements on the left side of the editor. Click Input . Step 3 | Connect the input elements to your collection Connect each of your input elements to a dataset that connects to your 'Submissions' collection. Then connect the input values to new collection fields that match the type of data you want to collect. You can connect the options that visitors select in dropdown and selection tag elements to items from another CMS collection. To do so, connect their list options to a different dataset that connects to a field in another collection. This dataset should be in the 'Read' or 'Read & Write' mode. Wix Editor In your editor, add a dataset that connects to your 'Submissions' collection: Click CMS on the left. Click Add Content Elements . Click Form dataset . Click the Choose a collection drop-down and select the 'Submissions' collection. Give the dataset a name (e.g. 'Submissions'). Click Create . Click any of the input elements you added. Connect the relevant dataset and choose the fields to use from the Labels and values connect to drop-down. Disabled: Click Manage Choices to create static choices for the element separate from the CMS. Repeat these steps for each of your custom CMS form's input elements. What about the dataset modes? If you added a 'Form dataset', it's already set correctly to the 'Write' mode. This mode allows the dataset to add new items to the collection based on the input element submissions. If you connected the options that visitors select in dropdown and selection tag elements, make sure that separate dataset is in 'Read' or 'Read & Write' mode. If you need your CMS form to update existing collection items, set the 'Submissions' dataset to 'Read & Write' mode . Make sure the collection permissions also allow people with the relevant roles to update content. Step 4 | Create a submit button You need to create a way for visitors to submit the input element responses they entered or selected. Create a 'Submit' button by adding a regular button or image and connecting it to the dataset's 'Submit' click action . When visitors click the 'Submit' button, the values from all the input elements that connect to your 'Submissions' dataset are saved to your collection. Depending on the dataset mode and your collection permissions , the values are either added as new items or used to update existing items. You can also create separate buttons for the following dataset actions: New: Add or update the collection items (depending on the dataset mode) and reset the inputs to accept new values. Revert: Reset the values in the input elements that have not yet been submitted. Delete: Remove selected items from your collection ('Read & Write' mode only). Next page/ Previous page: If you are displaying the items that visitors are editing in a gallery or repeater, you can add these buttons to let visitors navigate through "pages" of items. How do I connect multiple forms to a single CMS collection? You can connect multiple forms to the same CMS collection by connecting their input elements to datasets that all submit to the same CMS collection. Ensure that each form has a unique 'Submit' button and dataset to prevent conflicts. This setup allows you to gather data from various sources while maintaining a single collection for easy management. Are the success/failure messages accessible-friendly? Yes, the success and failure messages you add to your CMS form’s ‘Submit’ button are accessible. When you publish your site, these messages automatically receive the aria-live="polite" attribute. This means that screen readers on your live site will announce the message when it appears, so everyone is notified about the outcome of their submission. You cannot remove this attribute. Can I save responses at each step in a multi-step form? It is not possible to create a multi-step form with the CMS unless you code a custom solution with Velo. CMS forms you create with input elements save data only after the user completes and submits the form. However, you can create a multi-step form using Wix Forms, which allows you to manage the form steps without coding. Learn more about setting up a multi-step form with Wix Forms .
