- Studio Editor: Adding and Managing New Menus | Wix Expert
< Back Studio, Partners & Enterprise Wix Studio Studio Editor: Adding and Managing New Menus Add our latest menu element to streamline your site-building process while enhancing navigation for your client's visitors. Choose the best layout for each breakpoint – horizontal, vertical or a hamburger menu. Switching between layouts is straightforward, so you can adjust on the fly as your design evolves. Manage the menu items as needed by adding, removing and reordering the items. You can use dropdowns to display submenus with your own content, giving you the ability to create a tailored experience that fits your client's needs. Important: This article refers to the new menu element in the Studio Editor. For steps on managing the previous menu experience, please click here . How do I know which menu I have? You can check whether you have the new or old experience by clicking the menu in your editor and clicking the Layout icon . New menus: The blue label says Menu . The Layout panel displays the option to change the menu type (between navigation bar or hamburger). Old menus: The blue label specifies the type of menu element you have (e.g. Horizontal Menu). The Layout panel does not display the option to change the menu type. Adding a menu Add a menu to the site to get started. We recommend adding a menu to the site header, but you can add and set up as many as you need to tailor the experience for different pages and sections. To add a menu: Click Add Elements on the left side of your editor. Select Menu & Search . Select the menu type you want: Horizontal Menus: These advanced menus offer tons of unique customization options. You can tailor them to your exact needs, adjusting the layout and design of every single area. Vertical Menus: Vertically arranged menus that look great on the right or left sides of websites. Hamburger Menus : Minimalist, space-saving menus where the menu items are only displayed when visitors click the menu icon. The menu has an open and closed state. Click the menu and drag it to the desired position on the page. Changed your mind about the menu layout (type)? Don't worry - you can always change it later. Adding menu items Once you've added the menu, choose the items you want to display. Select regular site pages, collections of app and CMS pages, or specific pages within a collection. You can also add dropdown containers and links to truly tailor the experience for your client's needs. To add menu items: Select the menu in your editor. Click Manage Menu . Click + Add Item at the bottom. Select the item you want to add and set it up: Site pages Add pages you want to show on the menu. The panel lists regular site pages, pages from Wix apps installed on the site (e.g. a Wix Stores product page), and pages connected to collections in CMS . Whenever you see '(Item)' written next to a page name, it means the item includes multiple pages (e.g. certain CMS and Wix app pages). For example, the Product page in Wix Stores may contain a page for each product. You can choose to add all of the items (pages), or specific pages in the collection: Add all pages: Select the checkbox next to the relevant collection of pages. Click Add to Menu . Add specific pages: Hover over the collection of pages and click Select items . Select the pages you want to add from the list. Click Add to Menu . Learn more about linking your menu to dynamic CMS pages . Link or anchor You can add many kinds of links to the menu, such as links other websites, your client's contact details, etc. You can also link to an anchor you've added to a section or element. Dropdown Add a container that appears below the menu when visitors hover over the item. You can design it as needed, and use it to display menu items and additional content. Managing menu items You can always adjust an existing menu and the items it shows. Add more items, remove ones that are irrelevant, or change the order to keep the content fresh. To manage a menu: Select the relevant menu in your editor. Click Manage Menu . Choose what to do next: Add more menu items Click + Add Item at the bottom and select the item you want to add: Site pages: Add pages you want to show on the menu. Change a menu item's link Hover over the relevant item and click the More Actions icon . Click Change Link . Change the link type and / or its details. Click Done . Tip: You can also click Remove Link to delete a link from a menu item. Rename a menu item Hover over the relevant item and click the More Actions icon . Click Rename . Enter the new name. Press the Enter key on your keyboard to save your changes. Remove or delete an item Depending on the item type, you may see the option to remove it from the menu, or delete it completely. Removing items: These are items that exist regardless of the menu, like site pages and lightboxes. Removing these items means they're no longer displayed in the menu, but have not been deleted from the site. Hover over the relevant item and click the More Actions icon . Click Remove from menu . Deleting items: These are items that only exist within the menu, and not as separate elements (e.g. dropdowns). When you delete these items, they're gone from the site. Hover over the relevant item and click the More Actions icon . Click Delete . Note: If you delete a dropdown, any pages you have added to it are removed from the menu. However, you can always re-add them as needed. Reorder menu items Hold the Reorder icon next to an item and drag it to the desired position. Creating dropdowns There are 2 ways to create dropdowns in a menu, depending on what you want the title to be: An existing menu item: Decide on an existing item (page or link) from the menu to show the dropdown when visitors hover over it. A title that is not clickable: Add a dropdown title that does not lead to any page. When visitors hover over it, the dropdown container opens. Tip: Dropdowns were called mega menus in the previous menu experience. To add and set up a dropdown: Select the relevant menu in the editor. Click Manage Menu . Choose what you want to do: Use an existing menu item: Drag a menu item to move it below the item you want as the dropdown title. Hover over the same item and click the More Actions icon . Select Move under "Page Name" . Repeat steps a - c for all other items. Create a new dropdown: Click + Add Item . Select Dropdown . Enter the title for the dropdown. Press the Enter key on your keyboard to save your changes. Drag and drop menu items under the dropdown to add them. Repeat step e for all other items you want to add. Learn more about working with dropdowns Switching the menu to a different type Change the menu's layout for each breakpoint on the site. After adding the new menu element, hide the other menu from the breakpoint you're working on. Go to the breakpoint you want to have a unique menu. Add a new menu element. Click Manage Menu on the new menu element. Choose what menu items to display under Which menu is displayed? . - About Personally Identifiable Information (PII) | Wix Expert
< Back Privacy and GDPR Articles About Personally Identifiable Information (PII) As stated in our Terms of Use , it is the site owner’s responsibility to ensure that Wix services are permitted and abiding by local laws. Any information contained herein is not legal advice and you should not rely upon it as such. If you are uncertain about your responsibilities, it is always wise to get legal advice from an expert. Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is a term used to describe the types of data under legal protection in countries with privacy laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation ( GDPR ) and the California Consumer Privacy Act ( CCPA ). PII may be understood as any data that could potentially identify a specific individual, such as name, address, credit card number, and so on. Both in the GDPR and the CCPA, the definition of personal information is broad: All kinds of data may be regarded as PII. This means that there is no closed list of what can be considered as PII. The PII has to refer to a natural person, consumer, or, in California, a household. This means that the information should be somehow linked to a real individual / household. The natural person is identified or identifiable. This means that the information should be somehow linked to a specific person, or that the information could reasonably be linked to a specific person. Examples of PII include: name, address, email address, phone number, social security number, bank account details, credit card number...etc. If you decide to collect PII through your site, you have to treat this information accordingly. This varies between jurisdictions. We recommend you familiarize yourself with the regulations that apply to you and your site. In order to process PII correctly, we encourage you to mark PII fields accurately. Once you mark something as PII, we will work to comply with all relevant data protection regulations with regard to the treatment of PII. This is also true when you mark a certain group of data fields as PII - we will treat the whole group as PII. Accurate marking will indicate to us how we should store this data on your behalf. - CMS: About Validation Settings for Input Elements | Wix Expert
< Back Advanced features CMS CMS: About Validation Settings for Input Elements Wix's Content Management System (CMS) allows you to create custom forms with input elements that submit to your collection. Using the validation settings in your input elements helps ensure that the data you collect from visitors meets your specific requirements. You can also set validations for the collection fields that store the submitted input values. Using validation settings for input elements in your Wix CMS ensures that the data collected is accurate, complete, and meets your specific requirements. This improves the overall quality of your data and enhances the user experience on your site. Ensure data integrity with required fields Most input elements can be set as "Required." When an input element is required, the form will not submit if the field is empty. This prevents incomplete submissions and ensures that all necessary information is collected. If you set the connected collection field to "Required," users will see an error message if they attempt to submit the form with empty values. Note that switches do not have a "Required" option, but checkboxes do. Control the type of information collected You can configure text input elements to accept specific types of information, such as text, numbers, or email addresses. Each type performs a specific validation to ensure that the entered value matches the required format. Text Input Type Validation Additional Validations Text None Limit length, pattern Password None Limit length, pattern Number Value is a number Maximum value, minimum value, pattern Email Value is an email address Pattern URL Value is a URL that starts with "http" or "https" Pattern Phone Number Value is a phone number Pattern Limit the length of input values You can add character limits for input elements that are set to collect text. This ensures that the form does not submit if the entered value exceeds the specified length. This is useful for fields like usernames or descriptions where you want to control the amount of text entered. Set maximum and minimum values for numbers For input elements that collect numbers, you can specify the maximum and minimum values they can submit. This ensures that the submitted number falls within the acceptable range you define, preventing invalid data entries. Validate patterns with regular expressions Some input elements allow for additional pattern validation using regular expressions. For example, you can enforce a specific format for usernames using a regular expression like ^[a-zA-Z0-9_]{5,20}$ . This ensures that the username consists of 5 to 20 alphanumeric characters or underscores. The following is a regular expression you could add to your input element so that it only accepts valid usernames: ^[a-zA-Z0-9_]{5,20}$ In this expression, the ^ and $ represent the beginning and end of the string, respectively. Inside of those symbols are two sections, one enclosed in square brackets [] and the other in curly brackets {} . The section enclosed in square brackets [a-zA-Z0-9_] matches lowercase letters a-z , uppercase letters A-Z , numbers 0-9 , or underscores _ . The section enclosed in curly brackets {5,20} means you want between 5 and 20 characters that match the section that immediately preceded it, namely [a-zA-Z0-9_] . Restrict dates and times visitors can select Date picker input elements allow you to control which dates users can select. You can restrict users from choosing past dates, future dates, or specific days of the week, such as weekends. Additionally, you can choose from four different date formats: MM/DD/YYYY , DD/MM/YYYY , YYYY/MM/DD or YYYY/M/D ). Time picker input elements let you define the available and unavailable hours users can select. You can choose between a 12-hour or a 24-hour time format and set the time increments in which users can select. FAQs Click below for answers to common questions about the validation settings in input elements. Do all input elements have their own validation settings? No, not all input elements support validations. However, you can add validations to fields in your collection to make them required fields, limit character count, accept specific values only, or set default values. How do field validations apply to collection content? Input elements and collection fields have their own separate validation settings. Both types of validations work independently. One does not override the other in case there is a mismatch in validations between the input element and the collection field it connects to. Input elements have their own validation settings that apply to the specific element. They control what the user can submit through the input element. Click the relevant element and select Settings to access the element's validations. Collection fields have their own validations you can set differently for each field. They control what kind of data can be saved in the relevant collection field by checking to ensure the values match the validations. Field validations apply to both the content submitted by visitors and the content edited by you or your team. If a required field is left blank, users will see an error message. What happens if I disable the table layout in my collection? Disabling the table layout in your collection prevents the automatic saving of items with blank required fields. This ensures that all required fields are filled out before saving. In the list and gallery layouts, if you try to save an item without filling in a required field, you are prevented from saving. Instead, a warning message lets you know which fields need values before you can save them. Can I set default values for fields? Yes, you can set default values that automatically populate when new items are added. This helps prevent empty fields and ensures commonly used values are included. - Accessibility: Videos and Animation Not Playing on Live Site | Wix Expert
< Back Building an accessible site Advanced accessibility features Accessibility: Videos and Animation Not Playing on Live Site You or your visitors may notice that elements that contain motion (such as animation effects and transparent videos) do not play on both the mobile and desktop versions of your live site. This can be due to settings in the operating system that you or your visitor are using. There are two settings that prevent animation and videos from playing on a live site: Reduced Motion, and Best Performance. - Studio Editor: Adding a Custom Element | Wix Expert
< Back Studio, Partners & Enterprise Wix Studio Studio Editor: Adding a Custom Element Enhance your client's site with your own elements. You can add any Javascript component by linking a custom element to a server URL or a code file. If needed, you can set more attributes directly from the editor. Before you begin: Make sure your client's site has a connected domain and no Wix ads. What are custom elements? Custom elements let you use your own HTML tags. These elements work across all supported browsers, and can be used with any JavaScript ES6 library or framework that works with HTML 5. When embedding a custom element, there are some requirements to keep in mind: Your Javascript file must be hosted with Wix using Velo (recommended), or your own external or local server. Your code must contain HTTPS, not HTTP, or it will not be displayed on your live site. Your code must be up to date and HTML5 compatible. Most browsers don't display pages and scripts properly if they were written using older versions of JS or HTML. All relevant design settings and complex functionalities must be stored within the main JS code, for example the CSS and other JS files. If these settings are stored separately, it means they won't function on your site. Tips: You can use custom elements from third-party sources, just make sure to update the Tag Name in Properties when adding the custom element to your page. The performance of your custom element depends on its implementation. Adding and setting up the custom element Add as many custom elements as you need. After dragging a custom element to your page, define its source (server URL or a Velo file) and give it a tag name so you recognize it easily in the page registry. To add and set up a custom element: Click Add Elements on the left side of the editor. Click Embed & Social . Click Custom Element . Click the Add icon next to Custom Element . Add your script file: Select the custom element. Click Choose Source . Select how you want to add your custom element: Server URL: Enter the file URL, including the file name. Velo file: Select one of your Velo files. Enter a Tag Name for your element. Note: The tag name should be at least two words long, separated by a dash (e.g. big-weather-widget). (Optional) Adjust the element's size, docking and alignment from the Inspector panel. Notes: For security reasons, the custom element is rendered inside an iFrame in the editor and in preview mode. This might affect the layout of the component. Go to your published site to see how it looks live . You can define your element's SEO settings using Velo API. Setting the custom element's attributes Make further adjustments to your element's properties and behavior by setting attributes. The Element Attributes panel lets you add, edit and remove attributes directly from the editor, without having to access the actual code. Important: The code for your custom element must acknowledge and handle the defined attributes. Otherwise, they won't function properly. To set the custom element's attributes: Select the custom element. Click Set Attributes . Click New Attribute . Enter a name for the attribute (e.g. "rotation", "width"). Enter the value for the attribute (it can be any relevant string). Click Set . Looking for more advanced information? Learn how to use custom elements with Velo by Wix. - CMS: Differences Between Single Item and Multiple Item Collections | Wix Expert
< Back Advanced features CMS CMS: Differences Between Single Item and Multiple Item Collections Manage your content for static pages by storing it in a collection with a single item. You can display this content by connecting page elements such as text, images, videos or buttons to fields in your collection. Before you begin: Make sure to add the CMS to your site . Collections with a single item vs. multiple items A collection with a single item is ideal for storing content suited for static pages. You can display this content on one or more pages of your site, keeping it separate from your page design. This separation is beneficial for collaboration, as it prevents accidental deletion or alteration of the content. This type of collection does not use a table layout. Instead, you add fields to build the collection, similar to creating a form. A single-item collection is best for non-repeatable content, such as an 'About' page or a single element on your site, like a promotional banner in the header or footer. To display your content, connect elements on your page to the fields in your collection. While both types of collections store content, they serve different purposes: a single-item collection contains one block of content and is suited for static pages, whereas a collection with multiple items can store large amounts of content for dynamic pages. Click below to learn more differences between these collection types. Single item collections A collection with a single item contains one block of content made up of standard fields. This content can appear on one or more static pages of your website. With a single-item collection, you can: Model your content into an easy-to-edit and shareable format, ideal for collaboration. Choose various page elements (e.g., text, images, videos, buttons) to include in the collection. Build your content as you would add fields to a form. This collection type is best suited for non-repeatable content, such as an 'About' page or a single element on your site, like promotional banner on your homepage. Multiple item collections (default) A collection with multiple items can store large amounts of content, including both created content and submissions from site visitors. Advantages of a multiple-item collection include: Greater flexibility with dynamic pages, allowing for more than 100 static pages. Content can be displayed in elements such as repeaters or tables. Well-suited for property listings, portfolios, recipes, and similar content. Features a familiar structure with items (rows) and fields (columns) for organizing your content. Note: Once you create a collection, it cannot be converted from single-item to multiple-item, or vice versa. Limitations of a collection with a single item Using a collection with a single item provides a safe and secure environment for storing content, making it an ideal solution for collaborating. There are, however, some limitations compared to collections storing multiple items. While creating a collection with a single item: Once created, it can't be converted to a collection for multiple items. The Enable drafts setting can't be turned on, so you can't save changes as drafts, or use the 'Published' and 'Draft' statuses to control whether the item appears on your site. While managing its content: The primary field parameter can't be applied to a field. You can't import content . Reference and multi-reference fields can't be created. While connecting elements in the editor to data in a collection with a single item: Only the 'Read-Only' mode can be used for datasets. You can't hide, sort, or filter fields in your collection view . You can't connect user input elements in your editor.
