Creating 'Buy X Get Y' Automatic Discounts

Important:

Automatic discounts are currently available for Wix Stores, Wix Restaurant Orders (New), and Wix Bookings.

Reward customers for their purchases by offering something for free or at a reduced rate when they buy selected items. For example, you can create an automatic discount where a customer can buy 1 T-shirt and get another at 50% off. Customers who add 2 t-shirts to the cart automatically get the less expensive one at 50% off - without entering a coupon code.

  1. Go to your site's dashboard.

  2. Click Catalog.

  3. Select Discounts.

  4. Click Automatic Discounts.

In certain instances, automatic discounts won't be applied when customers purchase services:

  • Pricing plans: Automatic discounts aren't applied when a customer pays for a service with a membership package or plan, since the package or plan has already been purchased.

  • Minimum quantity: If you set a minimum quantity for the discount to take effect, it is not applied when the customer purchases 2 or more spots in the same class or course.

Automatic discounts are applied to the entire service price, even when you offer varied pricing or add-ons.

When you create an automatic discount, you choose when it starts and, optionally, when it ends. You can change this at any time by manually turning the discount on or off.

To manage which automatic discounts are live, go to Automatic Discounts in your site's dashboard and click the toggle next to the relevant discount.

  • Wix POS Register (for brick-and-mortar stores): If enabled, automatic discounts are applied to sales. Learn how to enable automatic discounts for Wix POS Register.

Note: If you set an automatic discount to apply only to individual members, it doesn't apply to a POS Register sale.

  • Mobile POS: If enabled, automatic discounts are applied to the sale of store products. Learn how to enable automatic discounts for Wix Mobile POS.

  • Desktop POS, and POS Go: Automatic discounts are not applied to sales. You can, however, manually enter a discount while processing the sale.

If the discounted price does not appear next to the item, it might be because the item has variants with multiple prices. Another reason can be that the discount has minimum requirements.

Once the customer makes additional selections or adds items to the cart, the discounted price is displayed. Learn more about how automatic discounts are displayed on your site.

Discounts are always displayed on the Cart page and the Checkout page.

If the discount is applied to Wix Stores products, you can choose to display discounts in the product galleries, as well as on the Category page and Product page.

Tip: When displayed in the product gallery and product page, some conditions apply.

Additionally, it can be helpful to display a banner, strip, or pop-up.

Just like it's important to let customers know that you offer discounts, you need to inform them about the limitations. You can do this using any of the methods you use to let customers know about automatic discounts.

If you created a discount and limited the number of uses, the limit applies per order.

For example, if you created a discount of 50% off all shoes and limited it to 2, a customer isn't blocked from making more than one order and applying the discount to each purchase.

Yes, automatic discounts can be applied to product subscriptions.

If the checkout takes place on the channel (e.g. on Amazon or eBay), then automatic discounts do not apply.

If you created a $10 off discount and applied it to a group of items, your customer gets $10 off each item it applies to.

For example, if you applied this discount to your vase category, your customer gets $10 off each vase they purchase.

If there's a discount on one category (e.g. vases), and it applies only if you buy 3 vases, purchases of items not in this category don't count towards the minimum of 3.

In other words, if you offer a $50 discount to customers who buy 3 or more vases, a customer who buys 1 vase and 2 other products does not get the discount.

Similarly, if you offered a discount on the vase category and set a minimum of $100, customers need to spend $100 on vases to get the discount.

This depends on what the discount applies to.

When the discounted item is the same as the required items:

When the discount item is the same as the required item, this is how it displays in the cart page:

In the image above, customers need to buy two $10 cotton onesies to get a third of the same onesie at 50% off. All 3 units appear discounted. Note that the discount is calculated accurately, and the customer pays $25.

When the discounted item is not the same as the required items:

In contrast to the last example, the customer needs to buy 2 specific $10 shirts to get a different item, a hat at 50% off. This is how it displays in the cart page:

There are 2 ways to offer your customers reduced prices:

  • Coupons: You can create coupons with coupon codes.

  • Automatic discounts: You can create automatic discounts.

These 2 price reduction methods work independently. In other words, if you created a coupon and an automatic discount that apply to the same products, a customer can get both price reductions.

When one or more items in an order are eligible for an automatic discount, we strive to make sure the customer gets the best price reduction. On rare occasions, however, there may be limitations. For example, only one discount can be applied to each item in the order.

Tip: To avoid confusion, avoid setting up more than one automatic discount for the same items.

Times are calculated in your time zone.

If enabled, your site's cart page and checkout page display a promo code option so customers can enter coupon codes.

You can create up to 10 quantity discounts per site.
